Upgrade Support is limited to upgrade assistance and does not include step-by-step guidance nor consultancy about the upgrade process nor troubleshooting Backup Exec 16.Ĭustomers running Backup Exec 16 who wish to migrate their existing jobs and backup data to new hardware can follow the steps provided in the articles below as appropriate for their environment: Veritas Support is available to assist customers who are actively upgrading from Backup Exec 16 to Backup Exec 20.x.

You can also use incremental backups - the first run of a job backs up full VM images, subsequent job runs are incremental – Veeam Backup copies only those data blocks that have changed since the last backup cycle. The latest release of Backup Exec is 20.3Įxisting customers with active maintenance may be entitled to upgrade at no charge. The resulting backup file stores VM data compressed and deduped. Image-based backups can be used for different types of recovery (full VM recovery, Instant VM Recovery, file-level recovery, etc.).

To retrieve VM data, no agent software needs to be installed inside the guest OS – instead, Veeam Backup leverages ESX snapshot capabilities. Veeam Backup is built specifically for virtual environments and operates at the virtualization layer - it uses an image-based approach for VM backup. Veeam Backup can also prevent replication jobs from consuming the entire bandwidth. To facilitate replication over WAN or slow connections, it optimizes traffic transmission – it filters out unnecessary data blocks (such as duplicated data, zero-data blocks or blocks of swap files) and compresses replica traffic. Veeam Backup can perform offsite replication for DR scenarios. Its replication provides the best RTO and RPO values, as you actually have a copy of your VM in a ready-to-start state. Rick, Veeam Backup & Replication is 2-in-1 solution including backup and replication of VMs. The file level recovery has benefited us on multiple occasions and Instant recovery is a great feature to have as well. Veeam has been a phenomenal product for us. We have clients using Veeam B&R with ESXi hosts. Please let me know what questions I can answer for you. This version protects 2 virtual sockets (VMware or HyperV) + 2 application servers (can be virtual or physical) & includes support. If you'd like to try out the Unitrends solution, we offer our NFR version to anyone with a VMware or Microsoft certification, and all SpiceUsers with the code "SPICYUEB". The Unitrends physical appliance family also provides protection for over 40 OSs allowing you to backup your entire environment from a single solution, includes instant recovery for VMware & Windows clients, includes both hardware & software, and has domestic based phone support. We also have native protection for SQL, Sharepoint, and Exchange. Rick - The big question here is do you want to manage multiple backup solutions to protect your diverse environment, or do you want to consolidate to a single solution to manage all of your backup needs? If you're willing to use Backup Exec to manage your physical clients, then you need to determine which VM solution meets your needs best.Īll Unitrends solutions include BareMetal backups & recovery, incremental forever backup, deduplication and in-line compression, encryption in flight or at rest, simple DR processes, and allow you to treat your VMs as VMs or physical boxes, depending on your recovery needs. I don't have to upgrade my Win Server 2008 R2 host if that makes a difference. Symantec says it will be several months still before they support Server 2012.

Symantec V-Ray and their Hyper-V agent don't support Windows Server 2012 which I though about upgrading my Hyper-V hosts (2) to Windows Server 2012. We went to virtual servers about 6 months ago. I currently am using latest Symantec Backup Exec version to backup files but no VM machines are being backed up as of yet. I don't have a lot of daily changes other than I do a full sql backup of about 100 GB daily. I have roughly 500 GB of data on a FULL weekly backup.

I have an older Poweredge 2900 with about 400 GB RAID 5 and 4 GB RAM that I thought about using to install Veeam on so I don't have to install it on my Hyper-V host.

I have the exact server at my offsite warehouse for replication over a 15x15 connection at the main office to the warehouse connection of 12x2. I am looking for the best backup solution for DR and archiving. Exchange is hosted off site with Office365. I have a T610 server with 64 GB Ram, 2 processor, running 5-6 VMs with one that includes SQL 2012.
